Major upgrades required to the existing Anglian Water waste water treatment works at Colchester, Essex. Anglian Water needed to increase the capacity of the Sludge Treatment Centre within the WwTW, resulting in an increased production of renewable electricity for the operations of both sites. Following determination by Ofwat, they had an obligation to deliver the following outputs by March 2015: increase total capacity for sludge treatment to enhanced treated standards across the Anglian Water region from 46% to a minimum of 80%, increase total on site renewable electricity generation from biogas to 86.8GWh/year and reduce biosolids treatment by lime stabilisation to less than 1% of the total raw sludge production. Colchester WwTW was recognised as one of five key sites where the upgrades were possible and would deliver the outcomes required.
